This session explores the transition of the NHS toward a more secure, efficient, and transparent way of using health and care data and particularly general practice data for clinical trials and real-world studies that will inform front-line care.

Hosted by Dr. Will Howard, Medical Director at Wessex LMCs, with guest speakers:

  • Mark Heffernan, Director of Operations at Wessex SDE
  • Jo Stuart, Senior Project Manager at Wessex SDE
  • Dr Keith Gomes Pinto, a GP from NHS Dorset who on the Data Access Committee for Wessex SDE and championing getting valuable GP data into the SDE.

Objectives:

  • Understand what a secure data environment (SDE) is and the robust governance in place for data access requests.
  • Understand the fundamental shift from data sharing to data access providing researchers with restricted access within a secure NHS environment where patient data is kept safe.
  • Outline SDE governance processes including the role of the data access committee (DAC) and we have involved the public and engaged patients throughout.
  • Outline the legal frameworks and principles that enable us to provide safe research access to data.
  • Highlight the difference between CPRD, OpenSAFELY and the SDE.
  • Outline the benefits to practices including reduced administrative burden, enhanced data governance, and new revenue streams.
  • Highlight the power of data linkage utilising general practice data combined with other data sets to drive real-world insights which will enhance front-line services and positively influence patient care.
  • Showcase key research user cases where General Practice data has or will have impact.
  • Discuss funding opportunities for participation.
  • Discuss how the data will flow into the SDE and what is expected of you.
