The Process of Being Revalidated

The LMC is regularly approached by GPs asking who their Responsible Officer (RO) is, and when will they be interviewed by them to be revalidated.  We hope the following will be useful but if you require more information the LMC has also produced a booklet Appraisal and Revalidation Guidance for GP's and Nurses

All GPs by should now know who their RO is. If you are a General Practitioner in the South of England you will connect to the local office that manages the performers list for that area:

South Central: Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Wiltshire, South Gloucestershire, Buckinghamshire.  or , 0113 825 3500

South East: Kent, Surrey, Sussex. , 01732 375200

Wessex: Southampton, Hampshire, IOW, Portsmouth, Bournemouth & Poole, Dorset. 0113 824 9948

South West: Bristol, Somerset, Gloucestershire, Devon, Cornwall, Isles of Scilly. , 0113 824 8951

Each RO is responsible for between 1-2500 doctors, and you will, therefore, not be required to have a face-to-face meeting with the RO.

A small team working with the RO will ensure you have:

and that there are no outstanding concerns or complaints about you.  They will then feedback to the RO who submits the required positive revalidation recommendation to the GMC.

Therefore the vast majority of GPs will know nothing of the process until they receive their renewed “licence to practise” from the GMC.

Those doctors who have not been able to fullfil all the requirements in time for their recommendation date for good reasons, or who are in an ongoing investigation, may be deferred.

Very few doctors, who fail to engage with the appraisal and revalidation process, will be referred to the GMC for failure to engage.
