Senior Healthcare Assistant - Living Well Partnership

Overall Aim

The Senior Healthcare Assistant will assist the GPs and Practice Nurses in the efficient running of the practice and the delivery of nursing services to the practice population. They will work under indirect supervision of the Lead Practice Nurse or a suitably qualified regulated professional. They will work collaboratively with the general practice team to develop the HCA role to meet the needs of patients, following policy and procedures.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Clinical skills- ensuring clinical procedures are compliant with core competencies such as recognising any contraindication to carry out the procedure, infection control, health and safety, prevention and management of inoculation injury and duty of care.
  • Measurement and Investigations- working within the guidelines for, undertake and record tasks such as blood pressure, pulse rate and rhythm, respiratory rate, temperature, height and weight etc
  • Delivering a quality service
  • Maintain confidentiality of information relating to patients, relatives staff and the practice.
  • Wound Care- On completion of suitable training be able to carry out dressing procedures, perform removal of sutures, undertake compression bandaging for chronic leg ulcers with indirect supervision of the PN, referring to them on a regular basis for assessment of progress of wound.
  • Minor Surgery- demonstrate knowledge in Infection control, sharps management, personal protective equipment and pre and post-operative care of the patients
  • Health Screening and Promotion- undertake NHS Health checks, identifying patients with increased risk of developing long term conditions such as diabetes. Deliver health education on healthy eating, smoking cessation, dementia awareness, exercise and alcohol consumption to patients invited for NHS Health checks.
  • Cleaning- Support the practice to meet its Infection Control standards by carrying out routine cleaning of clinical areas on a rota basis with other members of the team. Monitor vaccine fridge temperatures daily to meet vaccine storage standards.
  • Take responsibility for ordering clinical stores on a bi-weekly basis.
  • Utilise and demonstrate sensitive communication styles, to ensure patients are fully informed and consent to treatment.
  • Communicate effectively with patients and carers, recognising the need for alternative methods of communication to overcome different levels of understanding, cultural background, and preferred ways of communicating.


What we’re looking for!

  • Minimum 2 years in a clinical setting
  • Ideally experience of working in Primary Care / General Practice
  • NVQ Level 3 in Direct Care or equivalent recognized qualification
  • Infection Prevention and Control
  • Able to take full patient observations.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent communication and organisation skills
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Highly organised and able to prioritise workloads.
