Practice Manager Supporter – Emma Prince

Hi, I’m Emma Prince, Network Director for Bournemouth East Collaborative PCN.

I’ve often joked that if you cut me open, “NHS” would run through me like lettering in a stick of rock — although, if I’m honest, it would more accurately say “primary care”. My journey started early; at 14, when it came time to choose work experience, I asked for a placement in hospital management. My careers teacher told me in 30 years no one had ever requested that before. Two weeks in a large teaching hospital later, I was completely hooked.

After finishing my management degree, there was only one path I wanted — the NHS Graduate Training Scheme — and I was fortunate enough to secure a place. During the programme I spent time as a Deputy Practice Manager, and even then I knew primary care was where I belonged.

I’ve now spent 15 years as a Practice Manager, leading a variety of practices including a small two-partner practice and a large multi-site practice with 11 partners. Today I lead our Primary Care Network, employing around 60 staff through a limited company, and we are currently going through the process of becoming CQC registered. Alongside this, I work with the Dorset General Practice Alliance and co-chair the Dorset PCN Managers Group.

My particular interests lie in developing primary care at scale and how collaborative working can support general practice, as well as organisational development and culture. I’ll also admit — I genuinely enjoy the finance side of management.

Nearly 30 years on from that first experience as a management trainee, I still love working in primary care. It’s a sector that is constantly evolving — responsive, adaptable and never dull. You never stop learning. I certainly don’t claim to have all the answers, but I do have a breadth of experience and I’m passionate about supporting colleagues wherever I can.
