Completing the VTS is an amazing achievement but it can feel as though you are falling of the end of the training conveyor belt, with all help and support suddenly lost. Whilst some will go straight into Partnerships, many choose to work as Salaried or Locum GPs. A growing number of GPs appreciate having a Portfolio career, combining day-to-day Primary Care with management roles, commissioning, medico-politics or just the ability to achieve a positive work-life balance.

Wessex LMCs has recognised the value of Practice/Business Managers to General Practices within Wessex and has supported an initiative to develop a system of appraisal for them.  The Practice Managers’ Supporters Scheme and the linked Appraisal Scheme have been based, with kind permission, on the scheme in Scotland, developed by Marion Foster.

The BMA asks are Portfolio careers the ‘new normal’?  They quote “most GPs who diversify remain GPs alongside their additional roles, so if diversification means we retain wonderful experienced doctors in their roles with additional interests, and encourage new colleagues to join the GP ‘ranks’ then maybe this ‘new normal’ is a good thing and something to embrace”.
