Flu 2019/20- Practice Staff

As an employer, practices should be encouraging and offering staff with direct patient contact the opportunity to have a flu vaccination. This could be provided by the practice from your own stock or from a pharmacy. As an employer the practice is required to provide this as part of occupational health for their staff.

It should be noted that the new state backed indemnity scheme does not provide cover for practices to provide occupational health schemes. 

On 20th September the LMC sent out a communication to Practice Managers with an update on the position of indemnity for vaccinating practice staff.

This has been discussed at a national level and we are pleased to be able to quote the following from the BMA:-

Indemnity for staff flu vaccinations

Following the decision by the Department of Health and Social Care and NHS Resolution that CNSGP will not cover practices who vaccinate their own staff against flu, we have been in discussions with the medical defence organisations on the matter.

They have reassured us that all current members will be indemnified through them for this activity. If you are in any doubt about your indemnity arrangements, contact your MDO who will be able to guide you.

As mentioned above, you need to seek written confirmation from your MDO that you are indemnified to give your practice staff flu vaccinations.
