WGPET and Wessex LMCs are very pleased to announce the launch of 4, half day, on line learning sessions hosted by local GPs. The aim of these will be to provide local GP Updates across various topics.

09:00 - 10:00 The Obesity Pandemic, Root causes: Calories In/Calories Out or Hormones…. What’s the Evidence? – Graham Phillips – Pharmacist

Graham Philips is "the pharmacist who gave up drugs" and is passionate about optimising population and metabolic health, reducing obesity and the positive knock on effects that this has in reducing morbidity, reducing medication load, improving mental health and so much more.
"What’s the root cause of the obesity/diabetes pandemic?" If we are putting weight on, we are storing more calories than we are burning. What is the answer - is “eat less/move more” an oversimplistic view? Do other factors, like the type (rather than number) of calories and the impact of food on the insulin/glucagon and leptin/ghrelin axes play the largest part in the development of metabolic syndrome?

Aseem is a world-renowned expert in the prevention, diagnosis, and management of heart disease. He is a founding member of Action on Sugar and was the lead campaigner highlighting the harms caused by excess sugar consumption in the UK, particularly its role in type 2 diabetes. Today he is going to explore metabolic syndrome and how evidence-based lifestyle measures can prevent and treat chronic diseases including type 2 diabetes.

11:15 – 12:00 DVLA - A drive through of the basics with Dr Sarah Brown regarding awareness of the DVLA and the medical standards of fitness to drive. Covering standards for driving re common conditions seen in primary care such as strokes, dementia, alcohol problems and syncope. Information about when to consider a driving assessment and how to contact a DVLA doctor to notify or discuss difficult cases or topics. Familiarisation with “Assessing fitness to drive- a guide for medical professionals”.
12:00 - 13:00am An overview of Cancer referral guidelines, 2WW forms, Clinical decision support tools, FIT tests and more. A presentation follower by Q and A session with Dr Sania Ward, Clinical Lead for Dorset Cancer Partnership and Wessex Cancer Alliance GP Lead and Dr Jane McLeod, Wessex Cancer Alliance GP lead for Hampshire.
