Update on Named GP - Read Coding

Date sent: Friday 19 June 2015

Email sent by Wessex LMCs to all Practice Managers, on Friday 19th June 2015

Following on from our last PM newsletter we can now provide an update in relation to the Read Coding of the Named GP.

As you will be aware there has been confusion with this and therefore we have approached the BMA/GPC who have provided the following clarification:

AUA DES:

For patients who fall under the AUA DES practices have to Read Code “patient allocated named accountable general practitioner” by the 30th June 2015.  The “informing patient of named accountable General Practitioner” Read Code will already have been added last year for most of these patients, however for new patients who will not have had this code added this can be added by the 31st March 2016.

In summary both Read Codes are required however they have different timescales.

All Other Patients – Contractual Requirement:

As this is the new cohort of patients this year, all other patients will need the read code “patient allocated named accountable general practitioner” by the 30th June 2015.  The “informing patient of named accountable General Practitioner” Read Code will need to be added by the 31st March 2016.

In summary both Read Codes are required however they have different timescales.

The BMA/GPC are aware of an anomaly between the GMS contract guidance and the GMS Regulations. Under Regulation 4B it states that contractors must inform patients of the assignment of a named GP by 30 June 2015. NHS England has agreed that it is acceptable for practices to meet this criteria in line with the GMS contract guidance.

Therefore the BMA/GPC would not expect practices to be found in breach of contract by following the GMS contract guidance and the position set out in their 'Focus on named GP' document.

Please note that subsequently any new patients that register will need to be coded with the "patient allocated named accountable general practitioner" within 21 days of registration.

I hope this has now clarified the requirements for practices, please do come back to me if you have any queries regarding this.

Kind regards

Michelle
