Contracts - Liability Insurance

Contracts being issued to practices by the Local Authority Public Health Departments contain a clause concerning liability insurance. The following information has been disseminated to all the public health departments to clarify the position with regard to general medical practice:

GPs subscribe to a medical defence organisation for personal medical indemnity.  Membership terms vary but generally entitle professionals to assistance in the event of a negligence claim or other professional matter. Members of MDOs will have a sufficient level of ‘medical malpractice’ cover, which may be unlimited.  MDOs offer ‘occurrence or incident based’ schemes which give protection for claims arising from incidents that occurred within the subscription period no matter when they are reported.
