This webinar is suitable for experienced health care assistants and will provide all of the resources and tools necessary to deliver shingles immunisations. A prerequisite for HCA attendance is experience of general practice and evidence of learning in line with DoH National Minimum Standards and Core Curriculum for Immunisation Training of Healthcare Support Workers.  It is recommended that only HCAs who have achieved education and training to Level Three of the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF)4 or equivalent in England and Wales with at least 2 years’ experience as a HCA should be considered for training in vaccine administration. 

Delegates will be able to download a comprehensive workbook and competencies to be signed off by a mentor in practice. Any HCA attending will require a period of supervised practice and review of practice annually, including annual CPR and anaphylaxis updates.

This immunisation training course has been approved by PHE/NHS England South West Screening and Immunisation Team as conforming to the national minimum standards for immunisation training


In this session we will look at:

  • What is shingles
  • Undertaking a risk assessment of the patient prior to immunisation
  • Consent and documentation
  • Legal implications of advanced practice
  • Knowledge of NMC guides to medicine management and patient specific directives
  • Side effects/contraindications/follow up care/ anaphylaxis management
  • Safe handling and storage of vaccination including infection control
  • Practical demonstration to include consultation and procedure
  • Perform the consultation and procedure with confidence and competence


Upon completion of the course and workbook the clinician will have an awareness of the roles and responsibility associated with administration of the Shingles vaccination.

Practice Nurse Educator

Julia O'Mara qualified as a Registered General Nurse in 1989, and has experience in many fields of nursing and teaching. Julia has been working in Primary care in 1994 where she developed skills in practice nursing, long term conditions, first contact, history taking and assessment skills and independent nurse prescribing. Currently Julia has a leading role as The Nurse Advisor for Portsmouth City Clinical Commissioning Group. This role involves listening to the views of the nurses in the city and looking at ways to improve services and delivery of care. At a strategic level Julia manages and chairs the Professional Practice Nurse Forum, co-chairs the Non-Medical Prescriber's Forum and has an instrumental role in practice nurse education and development through TARGET

This option is for everyone working in a Practice in the Wessex LMC catchment area that does not fit into one of the other options on offer.


Non Members

This is the cost if you are not working in a Practice in the Wessex LMCs catchment area. £140.00

If you are on the waiting list and a place becomes available, you will be notified automatically you do NOT need to contact Wessex LMCs. 


All delegate fees are non-refundable, however, if it has been agreed that a refund is possible, it will be subject to an administration charge of £5 for fees of £100 or less, or £10 for fees more than £100.
