Ear wax and hearing loss are common presentations in Primary Care. However, without examining the ear it is difficult to offer recommendations or guidance. Join us in this session to explore ear presentations and gain confidence in examining the ear. This session is aimed at new GPNs, pharmacists, paramedics and advanced HCAs who may be advising and signposting the patient towards ear irrigation.

During this session we will be looking at:

  • Anatomy and physiology of the ear with an understanding of its mechanism and functioning
  • Awareness of differential ear presentations and their management
  • Health Promotion in relation to ear care and practical guidance

By the end of this session the learners will be able to:

  • Classify the A&P of the ear – Identifying normal landmarks and recognising abnormal presentations
  • Locate sources of reference in relation to disease management and pharmacological treatments
  • Appraise current management of ear irrigation within practice to support the patient in decision making and health promotion

Julia qualified as a Registered General Nurse in 1989 and has enjoyed a diverse career working in the emergency department and acute surgical wards before settling on a career in primary care. Since 1994 Julia has worked in General Practice, building her portfolio of skills to include practice nursing and management of long-term conditions. As her career developed, she later extended her role to become a nurse practitioner and independent prescriber, working in both leadership and acute care. Her work in a large inner-city practice in Portsmouth continued until spring of 2023 whereby Julia took the decision to retire from clinical practice and focus on  her educational role exclusively.

Julia remains passionate about nurse training and education, enjoying both the challenges and rewards that this brings. Her vision is to make education and learning fun, interactive, easy to understand and practical with realistic expectations for Primary Care.
