This introductory course is suitable for Practice Nurses, Registered Nurse Associates, and AHPs who are new to contraception and sexual health care.  In order to get the most out of the course we would recommend reading the  e-learning for Healthcare modules on Sexual and Reproductive Health  – modules 2 and 3 for those new to the subject and 4 (emergency contraception) if you have time. If you are already familiar with contraception you may wish to cover these anyway, but we would recommend looking at Module 5 (Contraception: complications/side-effects) prior to the course.  If you haven’t already used e-learning  for healthcare you can register for free access.

Through a mix of lectures, small group work and case discussion, the course aims to give you the basic knowledge required to discuss the range of available contraceptive methods and carry out asymptomatic sexual health screening.

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Consider diversity, sexuality, attitudes and values in demonstrating a non-judgemental service
  • Have confidence in assessing patients who require contraception and sexual health care
  • Discuss contraceptive methods, their mode of action, contra-indications, risks and benefits in order to carry out an effective contraception choices consultation
  • Manage the repeat issuing of CHC, POP and Depo
  • Understand when emergency contraception might be required and where and when to refer
  • Have an understanding of how common sexually transmitted infections may present
  • Be confident to take a sexual history and risk assessment
  • Be able to perform an asymptomatic sexual health screen

Please note: this session will NOT be recorded
