This training will be run over Zoom. To participate you will need to install Zoom on your device, and ensure it is has a microphone, speaker, and camera. Please Note: Some trainers will no longer allow you to stay on the call if you do not have your camera operating.

To participate you will need a device capable of running Zoom, that also has a microphone and speaker, a camera is beneficial but not essential.

Introduction 

This half day workshop is provided for Health Care Assistants in Primary care who are currently removing sutures/staples and feel they would benefit from some learning, and evidence of practice; or it has been identified as a potential new learning need. The workshop will discuss the knowledge and skills needed to risk assess a wound and provide evidence around a competent technique. All delegates attending this workshop will receive a competency framework for their portfolios of evidence to be observed by their mentor and signed off in practice.

Aims

During this session we will look at:

  • the signs and symptoms of an approximated wound.
  • the variety of sutures
  • complex wound care

Objectives

On completion of this training you will:

  • understand the basic principles of infection control and asepsis when removing staples and sutures.
  • have an awareness and knowledge of
    • when to refer
    • how to recognise deterioration in a wound with closures such as dehiscence.
  • the challenges of, and how to manage cases.
  •  have a competency framework that provides evidence of learning to meet the requirements of patient safety and CQC.

Qualifications

  • RGN (Bsc)
  • NMP
  • PGCE

Julia qualified as a Registered General Nurse in 1989 and has enjoyed a diverse career working in the emergency department and acute surgical wards before settling on a career in primary care. Since 1994 Julia has worked in General Practice, building her portfolio of skills to include practice nursing and management of long-term conditions. As her career developed, she later extended her role to become a nurse practitioner and independent prescriber, working in both leadership and acute care. Her work in a large inner-city practice in Portsmouth continued until spring of 2023 whereby Julia took the decision to retire from clinical practice and focus on  her educational role exclusively.

Julia remains passionate about nurse training and education, enjoying both the challenges and rewards that this brings. Her vision is to make education and learning fun, interactive, easy to understand and practical with realistic expectations for Primary Care.

This option is for everyone working in a Practice in the Wessex LMC catchment area that does not fit into one of the other options on offer.

£70.00

Non Members

This is the cost if you are not working in a Practice in the Wessex LMCs catchment area. £140.00

Waiting List

Please be advised there are spaces available on this course unless it states otherwise. If a course is full you will be given the option to book on the waiting list. If you are on the waiting list and a place becomes available, you will be notified automatically you do NOT need to contact Wessex LMCs. 

Refunds

All delegate fees are non-refundable, however, if it has been agreed that a refund is possible, it will be subject to an administration charge of £5 for fees of £100 or less, or £10 for fees more than £100.
