Introduction

This webinar is for all clinicians who undertake patient consultations and would like a steer on how to deal with patients who present with medically unexplained symptoms.

Aims

A significant proportion of patients who present to clinicians will turn out to have symptoms that are medically inexplicable.

Most doctors and nurses have regular patients who leave them feeling “overwhelmed”. The expression “heartsink” has been applied to them. Such patients present frustrations and challenges for all clinicians. We now have clear evidence that can guide more effective use of time and lead to better outcomes.

Objectives

Delegates will learn:

  • What we mean by Medically Unexplained Symptoms (MUS), and how we can be more proactive in recognising it in our patients
  • How to differentiate between non epileptic attack disorder and epilepsy
  • How to connect with patients when there is a mismatch in their expectations regarding further investigation or referrals
  • How to resist compounding polypharmacy in patients with MUS
  • How to develop our own coping strategies for dealing with emotionally charged consultations in patients with MUS

Delegates will receive access to post session resources to support this training.
