Introduction

This introductory study session is for all new learners, or those requiring a comprehensive update on theory and practical skills.

Aims

  • Be aware of the updated National Wound Care Strategy Programme Leg Ulcer Recommendations for compression (2023)
  • ‘Immediate and Necessary Care’ of the lower limb trauma using compression
  • Introduction to venous leg ulceration or allied complications
  • Compression theories
  • Compression types and choices
  • Strategies to prevent ulcer occurrence or recurrence.
  • How to promote supported self-care for a patient
  • Pathway to ‘competency’ guidance

Objectives

The session offers the opportunity for all healthcare practitioners to gain knowledge, confidence and skills in compression therapies used for venous/mixed leg ulcers, leg oedema and prevention, using effective compression. It will provide an overview of conditions that would benefit from compression, and the choices, implications and planning for the appropriate management.

NB: The session will not deem the learner 'competent'. The ‘journey to competency’ will be explored using national capability framework resource and subsequent eLearning modules, as will contacting the Tissue Viability team to access any local policies, documents and tools to support their learning that may be available.

A modified pdf of the presentation and resources/links will be available on the Wessex LMCs Website after the event.

Please note this session is NOT being recorded

Trainer

Denise has been involved in Chronic Wound Care and leg ulcer management since the 1990's, and since 2013 she has been working independently, primarily around Practice Nursing with the registered and unregistered practitioners regarding education, competency achievement, and seeing complex patients to support diagnosis and care planning. She still works clinically within Portsmouth CCG Primary Care, and sees patients if needed in the acute sector, specialist units such as Vascular and Dermatology, and in the Community. Denise is currently involved in reviewing compression hosiery for the Hampshire Formulary Inclusion, NICE Expert Group for antimicrobial solutions, and driving forward all the exciting changes from the National Wound Care Strategy to push leg care forward and improve outcomes.
