This is a three-day introduction course to asthma & chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) for healthcare professionals (Registered and Associate Nurses, Paramedics, Pharmacists, Physiotherapists & Physicians Associates). This course is also suitable for level 3 or above HCA/HCSW who are supported by a Registered healthcare professional with appropriate respiratory training and experience.


  • Provide an overview of the current understanding of asthma and COPD and an introduction to the monitoring and treatment available for both conditions.
  • Provide a knowledge base for HCP’s new to asthma and COPD to enhance knowledge and skills relevant for general practice.
  • Provide an overview of the key differences in the signs and symptoms of asthma and COPD and an awareness of differential diagnosis.
  • Introduction to risk identification and discuss appropriate escalation.
  • Commence a pathway of respiratory education and equip candidate to continue pathway through self-directed formal learning in line with Fit to Care: Key Knowledge, Skills and Training for Clinicians providing Respiratory Care (PCRS, 2022) .
  • Encourage self-directed learning, including reading of current key guidance and evidence-based literature.


On completion of the three course days, by undertaking additional self-directed learning and with the support from a suitable mentor in practice, healthcare professionals should:

  • Have an increased understanding of the disease processes and how the patient may be affected
  • Have an awareness of differential diagnosis of respiratory disease and the similarities and differences between asthma and COPD
  • Have improved awareness of history taking in respiratory disease
  • Appreciate the complexity of making a diagnosis of asthma or COPD
  • Have the ability to use a peak flow meter, teach the technique and an understanding of peak flow monitoring.
  • Have an awareness of the place of spirometry in the diagnosis and monitoring of respiratory disease. Further training is required to perform this procedure and interpret results.
  • Have an awareness of the current guidelines for asthma and COPD.
  • Have knowledge of commonly used inhaler devices, spacer, add-ons and supporting tools in inhaler technique to work towards a robust inhaler technique check
  • Have improved understanding of assessing acute asthma and exacerbations of COPD in primary care
  • Have an understanding of the importance of education and self-management to improve concordance with treatment and enable the patient to actively manage their condition
  • Be working towards undertaking a basic monitoring patient review
  • Have an understanding of what is an effective respiratory consultation & an awareness of how this may be managed in a time limited environment

Mrs Carla Astles

Carla qualified as a Registered Nurse in 1997 and has experienced a variety of roles, the core focus being primary care having accepted her first post as a Practice Nurse 10 months after qualifying. Areas of work include General Practice Nurse/Advanced Nurse Practitioner, Respiratory Educator Nurse, (CCG commissioned role and independent), Respiratory Nurse Researcher (NIHR), Prison Nursing and a Medical-Legal role. Carla completed all taught modules (equivalent of PG Dip) and is currently writing a Dissertation for the pathway leading to an MSc Advanced Clinical Practice.

Mrs Kerry Woodward

Kerry is an experienced respiratory nurse specialist who is able to deliver high quality training in a range of respiratory skills. She has an extensive background in primary care, having worked as a general practice nurse, lead nurse and currently works as a PCN respiratory nurse specialist in Portsmouth. Kerry promotes best practice in her work and is passionate about driving changes to develop improved services for patients with respiratory disease.

This option is for everyone working in a Practice in the Wessex LMC catchment area that does not fit into one of the other options on offer.


Non Members

This is the cost if you are not working in a Practice in the Wessex LMCs catchment area. £770.00

Please be advised there are spaces available on this course unless it states otherwise. If a course is full you will be given the option to book on the waiting list. If you are on the waiting list and a place becomes available, you will be notified automatically you do NOT need to contact Wessex LMCs. 


All delegate fees are non-refundable, however, if it has been agreed that a refund is possible, it will be subject to an administration charge of £5 for fees of £100 or less, or £10 for fees more than £100.
