This one-day course is open to all HCAs who are currently working in practice and who are looking to develop their skills in vaccinations.  It is best practice to become proficient and competent in flu vaccinations before attending pneumococcal/shingles training due to the additional learning achieved through that programme, but it should not be considered a pre-requisite to attending any of the courses, so long as you have robust mentorship and support within your organisation.

It is recommended that only HCAs who have achieved education and training to Level Three of the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF)4 or equivalent in England and Wales, with at least 2 years’ experience as an HCA, should be considered for training in vaccine administration.  The HCA must be regularly updated on resuscitation and anaphylaxis training.

This immunisation training course has been approved by PHE/NHS England South West Screening and Immunisation Team as conforming to the national minimum standards for immunisation training

The course will cover:

  • The role of the HCA in extended practice
  • What is Pernicious anemia; the symptoms, causes and treatment
  • Monitoring patients with B12 deficiency
  • Prescribing legislation for administration / legal issues / PSD
  • Record keeping/documentation/communication with patients/capacity/consent
  • What is Pneumococcal disease?
  • Injection administration and techniques including practical session
  • Understand the legal implications of extended practice
  • Be aware of NMC guidance for medicine management
  • Demonstrate safe storage and handling of vaccines including infection control
  • Undertake a risk assessment of the patient prior to immunisation
  • Perform the procedure and consultation with confidence and competence

The course will provide:

  • a competency framework to use with the mentor at your Practice,
  • a protocol for the administration of B12 injections and Pneumococcal vaccinations by HCAs
  • an example of a Patient Specific Directive (PSD) for prescribing and legal purposes.

All of these documents will need to be downloaded from the  J2S website.  NB: You will be given the password to access these in an email reminder 1 week before the course.

Please note this session will NOT be recorded

As her career developed, she later extended her role to become a nurse practitioner and independent prescriber, working in both leadership and acute care.
