Introduction

The course will explore Herpes Zoster disease, prevalence, and risks to the individual, before discussing the vaccination in detail and the governance for safe practice. Students will have access to the relevant paperwork for practice, and a competency framework for completion in the workplace with mentor supervision. Β

TheΒ National Minimum StandardsΒ recommend that only experienced Health Care Support Workers (HCSW) or Health Care Assistants (HCA) take on a role in administering vaccines. It is expected that these HCSWs/HCAs will have achieved education and training to Level Three of theΒ Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF)Β or equivalent, and that they would be working at Level Three or above of theΒ NHS Career Framework. e.g. having completed the Level 3 Health and Social Care Diploma.Β  It is essential that practitioners possess the fundamental knowledge and competencies required before progressing to vaccine-specific courses and injectable treatments such as Flu, Pneumococcal, Shingrix, Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Polio. This foundational knowledge can be obtained by attending either theΒ Core Immunisation Training for HCAsΒ courses, or one of theΒ Full-day Introduction to FluΒ courses.

Aims

In this session we will look at:

  • What is Herpes Zoster?
  • Why is there a Public Health vaccination program for shingles?Β
  • Undertaking a risk assessment of the patient prior to immunisation
  • Safe handling and storage of vaccination including vaccine and patient preparation
  • The consultation process and procedure
  • Resources to support the learning

Objectives

The objectives of this session are to:Β

  • provide HCAΒ with the knowledge and skills required for the procedure of administering Shingles vaccination
  • provide the HCA with resources, education and awareness of the legal issues, accountability and prescribing through delegation
  • provide the mechanisms for the HCA to be signed off as competent by a trained nurse in their workplace and follow the protocols and framework supplied for safe practice

Previous Delegate Feedback

Julia qualified as a Registered General Nurse in 1989 (RGN (Bsc), NMP, PGCE) and has enjoyed a diverse career working in the emergency department and acute surgical wards before settling on a career in primary care. Since 1994 Julia has worked in General Practice, building her portfolio of skills to include practice nursing and management of long-term conditions. As her career developed, she later extended her role to become a nurse practitioner and independent prescriber, working in both leadership and acute care. Her work in a large inner-city practice in Portsmouth continued until spring of 2023 whereby Julia took the decision to retire from clinical practice and focus on  her educational role exclusively.

Julia remains passionate about nurse training and education, enjoying both the challenges and rewards that this brings. Her vision is to make education and learning fun, interactive, easy to understand and practical with realistic expectations for Primary Care.

This led onto a role with Portsmouth PCT, then CCG and finally ICB as the executive nurse for primary care, a role she resigned in 2023.

Having made the decision to leave her strategic role Julia now focuses on education within the company J2S that she started with her colleague over a decade ago. Julia’s speciality in teaching is General practice skills-based learning that is evidence based to ensure that health professionals can apply their knowledge by providing a high standard of safe and compassionate care.
