Introduction

This half day course is for any clinician working in primary care who will be undertaking ear care and possible irrigation in the workplace. It will revisit the theory of ear care, exploring the anatomy and physiology of the ear and common ear presentations.  There will be theoretical learning for assessment of the ear with accurate use of the otoscope to enable thorough examination. The principles of preparing an ear for irrigation will be discussed, but this will not incorporate the practical process of irrigation, which requires additional training.  A competency framework will be provided for support of learning to examine the ear and sign off within the workplace.

Since 1994 Julia has worked in General Practice, building her portfolio of skills to include practice nursing and management of long-term conditions. As her career developed, she later extended her role to become a nurse practitioner and independent prescriber, working in both leadership and acute care. Her work in a large inner-city practice in Portsmouth continued until spring of 2023 whereby Julia took the decision to retire from clinical practice and focus on  her educational role exclusively.
