Introduction

How do you manage a complex mental health consultation without losing control of the consultation or your own wellbeing?

Mental health consultations can be some of the most challenging in primary care. They can be emotionally demanding, difficult to navigate and, before you know it, you're running 30 minutes late and the next patient has been thinking up even more problems while they’ve been waiting!

Aims

This practical and interactive workshop aims to help you develop the skills and confidence to manage challenging mental health consultations safely, compassionately and effectively, while balancing the realities of time pressure and clinician wellbeing.

Content

During the session we will explore how to:

  • Structure challenging mental health consultations with greater confidence
  • Balance patient needs with time pressures and keep consultations focused
  • Manage highly charged or conflictual consultations effectively
  • Strengthen your approach to risk assessment and safety where suicide is a concern
  • Support patients who are lower risk while maintaining appropriate boundaries
  • Protect your own emotional wellbeing when consultations are particularly demanding

Gain practical strategies you can take straight into your next challenging consultation, helping you feel more confident, more in control and better equipped to manage patients with mental health issues
