Introduction

This one‑day virtual course helps non‑clinical team leaders and practice managers to delegate confidently, supervise staff effectively and hold structured, coaching‑style 1:1 performance conversations.

Aims & Objectives

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • DefineΒ and differentiate appraisal/PDR, PDP, CPD and performance management, and explain how delegation and supervision underpin effective performance and development across the year.
  • UseΒ coaching‑informed delegation, applying tools such as the skill–will matrix and COM‑B to decide what to delegate, to whom and how, so that tasks stretch staff appropriately without overwhelming them.
  • Structure supervisionΒ as an ongoing, two‑way process that uses open questions, listening and simple behavioural tools (team charters, perceptions model, 360‑style input) to review workload, behaviours and progress, not just tasks.
  • Identify and respondΒ to different motivation and performance patterns in their team – including plateaus and outliers – using coaching conversations to explore what is β€œunder the surface” and to co‑create realistic next steps.
  • Plan and conductΒ 1:1 performance reviews that build on the year’s delegation and supervision (so there are no surprises), using advance preparation, balanced PAID‑style feedback and jointly agreed objectives and development activities.

Content

This course clarifies core concepts such as appraisal/PDR, PDP, CPD and performance management, then focuses on how leaders can use ongoing delegation and supervision to maintain excellence, prevent performance plateaus and support continuous development.

Using tools such as the perceptions model, team charters, the skill–will matrix, COM‑B and a structured feedback approach, participants learn how to match tasks to people, agree behavioural expectations, check in on progress and wellbeing, and address issues early through supportive coaching conversations.

Formal appraisals are then framed as a natural extension of this process – a planned opportunity to consolidate objectives, review behaviours and celebrate achievements, with β€œno surprises” because issues have already been surfaced and discussed through regular supervision.
