Introduction
This 3-hour virtual course equips non-clinical staff such as care navigators and receptionists to direct patients to the most appropriate care pathway, using care navigation and effective signposting.
Aims & Objectives
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Distinguish between care navigation/signposting and clinical triage, and explain how they work together to direct patients to the right ARRS roles, pathways or services.
- Identify the various routes a patient’s care may take based on their needs, including how to access and best utilise local pathways in their surgery/PCN.
- Recognise red-flag symptoms (including Sepsis*) using clear protocols, and confidently escalate these for urgent clinician review while reassuring patients.Â
- Apply effective communication skills – including creating rapport, asking open questions, actively listening and maintaining conversational control – to guide patients clearly and positively.
- Respond to common patient reactions and concerns with empathy and clarity, ensuring conversations stay focused and lead to appropriate next steps.
Content
Participants WILL explore the different ways patients contact the surgery (online, phone, in person) and clarify the difference between care navigation/signposting and clinical triage, showing how they work together to match patient needs with available ARRS roles and local pathways.
The session covers recognising red-flag symptoms requiring urgent escalation.
The course then shifts the focus to that of effective communication, as this is at the core of all care navigation. Striding Edge has developed a flow chart with the key skills required for effective communication and we will work through this with the delegates in a fun and interactive way, encouraging them to share experiences and techniques. We finish up the session with a quick review of common patient responses and how to deal with them.
