Introduction

This one‑day virtual course introduces non‑clinical team leaders and practice managers to a structured, step‑by‑step approach to leading change in general practice, based on John Kotter’s 8‑step change model.

Aims & Objectives

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the key stages in a structured change model (Kotter’s 8 steps) and how these apply to changes in general practice settings.
  • Assess the level of urgency, buy‑in and potential barriers around a change they are involved in, and identify practical actions to strengthen the case for change.
  • Develop a simple, clear vision and set of messages for a change project, and plan how to communicate these consistently to different stakeholders.
  • Identify likely obstacles and sources of resistance (people, processes, structures) and outline strategies to remove or reduce these.
  • Plan quick wins and longer‑term steps to build momentum, avoid “early victoryâ€ traps, and anchor successful changes into team or practice culture.

Content

This course explores how to create a genuine sense of urgency, build a coalition for change, develop and communicate a clear vision, and then remove obstacles, create quick wins, and embed new ways of working into everyday culture.

Through discussion, reflection and primary‑care‑focused examples, participants learn how to move from “managing tasks to actively leading change, engaging their teams and sustaining improvements rather than seeing them slip back over time
