Introduction
This virtual course supports non-clinical staff in general practice to communicate more confidently and compassionately with patients whose behaviour or responses may feel challenging or difficult to understand.
Aims & Objectives
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
-
Describe Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and explain how trauma influences patients’ beliefs, reactions, communication and health choices, contributing to health inequalities.
-
Recognise how neurodivergence shapes human interaction and patient responses and adjust their communication approach to meet diverse needs without judgement.
-
Apply trauma-informed principles (such as safety, trust and empowerment) in everyday patient conversations to reduce distress and build rapport.
-
Use empathy and compassion consistently as practical communication skills with all patients, regardless of their behaviour or circumstances.
-
Reflect on challenging interactions through a trauma-aware lens, identifying small changes in their approach that create more inclusive and supportive encounters.
Content
This course explores how people’s communication is shaped by their life experiences, needs and context, including neurodivergence, trauma and social inequality, and works from the starting point that most people are doing the best they can in the circumstances they are in.
Drawing on trauma-informed principles and contemporary thinking about trauma and adversity – including Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) – participants consider how unseen experiences and deep-seated wounds can influence how people see the world, make choices and interact with services, including decisions that contribute to health inequalities.
The course emphasises empathy and compassion as practical skills rather than abstract ideals, enabling staff to build rapport, reduce escalation and create more inclusive, safe and respectful interactions with all patients.
