Introduction

This new study session is aimed at the experienced Practice Nurse/practitioner who wants to explore issues and actions required when these two core skills cannot be undertaken or completed due to complications, or the outcomes are confusing when planning care, or onward referral.

It offers realistic and practical solutions to these dilemmas and challenges when caring for patients with leg ulcers, chronic oedema, etc.

Aim

To enable the experienced practitioner to manage the patient with leg conditions more effectively in the presence of a complicated or incomplete assessment, and thereby to improve treatment options and outcomes.

  • Open forum exploring  the  common challenging themes experienced with Doppler and Compression in practice.
  • Defining an abnormal or incomplete Doppler result, including ABPI reliability with certain conditions, and the connection with compression levels.
  • Discovering actions, practical techniques and referral options after an incomplete assessment.
  • Compression without Doppler in the presence of oedema - what levels can be offered.
  • Compression considerations and actions woth co-morbidities, eg. diabetes, heart failure, inflammatory conditions, chronic oedema etc
  • Managing issues and choices of adequate compression to feet/toes, abnormal limb shape, exudate levels, the value of made to measure compression and seeking help
  • Considering when the challenges are not clinical?

(This session complements the ‘Complex and Hard to Heal Wounds’ session which explores the complex wound bed more fully, risk factors, differential diagnosis, and chronic/non healing or deteriorating wounds)

Following this session, the learner will be able to access further information/links to support the holistic assessment to offer optimal care.

Please Note: The session will not deem the learner 'competent'.  The ‘journey to competency’ will be explored using national capability framework resource and subsequent eLearning modules, as will contacting the Tissue Viability team to access any local policies, documents and tools to support their learning that may be available. Please see this short video 'A guide to becoming competent'.
