Introduction

This half day online session is for all healthcare practitioners. The session will explore the multiple variables, key factors and assessment needed when considering dressing selection.  There will be discussion regarding the various types of dressings on your formularies, including how they work, what they do, indications and contraindications.  The session will also explore the importance of holistically assessing patients to aid appropriate and optimal care planning to maximise patient outcomes. There will be patient scenarios and wound photos to aid/embed learning.

Aims

In this session learners will:

  • Refresher on wound assessment (TIMES) and tissue types
  • Enhance/gain understanding of the role of dressings and cleansing solutions in wound care
  • Recognise and understand the importance of the local Wound Care Formulary
  • Basic rules of ordering, storing and disposal of products
  • Gain a deeper understanding of the different groups of dressings, how to use them, when to use them and contraindications
  • Develop knowledge of resources and how to gain more learning and understanding of dressings
  • Discuss patient scenarios with wound photos
  • The session provides delegates with the opportunity to ask questions

Objectives

This session will provide the learner with increased confidence and knowledge necessary to understand dressing selection. The session will, however, not deem a learner 'competent'. The trainer will provide some guidance on how to progress through a generic ‘competency’ framework, and the attendee should seek help from their local Tissue Viability team to access any local policies, documents and tools to support the learning that may be available.  Please see this short video 'A guide to becoming competent'.

Previous Delegate Feedback

"Fantastic session. Exactly what I needed to understand wounds and selecting the dressings."

Matthew currently practices as an Advanced Tissue Viability Nurse Specialist working within a Hampshire NHS Trust.

He spent most of his career working in a community nursing setting, building a passion for wound care. In 2017 he became the first ‘Enhanced Wound Care Nurse’ in his trust, where, using enhanced knowledge and skills provided by the Tissue Viability specialist team, Matthew was able to evidence both better patient outcomes as well as a reduction in the number of wound care patient visits. Being successful in the role has led to the role out of ‘Enhanced Wound Care Nurses’ across the trust.

Matthew has taken the opportunity to become a community team lead on a secondment to hone his leadership and management skills, but was always keen to return to his passion and sought out a position in the local Tissue Viability Specialist Team as Advanced Tissue Viability Specialist Nurse. Matthew is an independent nurse prescriber.

Within his current role Matthew provides support, guidance and training to Primary Care across multiple practices in Hampshire. He regularly provides wound care training for community practitioners, community hospital practitioners, mental health practitioners, primary care practitioners, and nursing home nurses.
