Introduction

This live-online, instructor led, introductory course is suitable for Practice Nurses, Registered Nurse Associates, and AHPs who are new to contraception and sexual health care. In order to get the most out of the course we would recommend reading the e-learning for Healthcare - Sexual and Reproductive Health  – modules 2 and 3,  (You will need to click 'View' at the top right to view the modules), and if you have time, module 4 (emergency contraception). If you haven’t already used e-learning for healthcare you can register for free access here.

Aims

Through a mix of lectures and case discussions, the course aims to give you the basic knowledge required to discuss the range of available contraceptive methods, manage safe repeat issuing of common methods, and carry out asymptomatic sexual health screening.

Objectives

By the end of the course, you will:

  • Have confidence in assessing patients who require contraception and sexual health care.
  • Discuss contraceptive methods, their mode of action, contra-indications, risks, and benefits to provide an effective contraception choices consultation.
  • Manage the repeat issuing of Combined Hormonal Contraception, Progesterone Only Pills and Progesterone Only Injectables.
  • Understand when emergency contraception might be required and where and when to refer.
  • Be confident to take a sexual history and risk assessment.
  • Be able to perform an asymptomatic sexual health screen.
  • Consider how to provide an inclusive, non-judgemental service which embraces diversity in sexual health, considers safeguarding and improves accessibility to good sexual healthcare.

Please note that handouts on some topics are provided to support the lecture content but the slides will not be made available to you.
