Introduction

This virtual introductory study session is for all new learners (registered or unregistered), and for anyone requiring a comprehensive update on theory and practical skills in lower limb compression therapy.

Aims

The session will cover:

  • Understanding the National Wound Care Strategy Programme Leg Ulcer Recommendations for compression (2020-2024)
  • Introduction to who’s at risk, the active venous or mixed ulceration or allied complications, such as oedema
  • Understanding the action and importance of ‘Immediate and Necessary Care’ of the lower limb presenting with trauma or breakdown by using mild compression
  • Recognising and advocating the importance of adequate therapeutic compression post assessment  including theories, strengths, types and how we choose
  • To explore strategies to prevent ulcer recurrence, and how and when to promote supported self-care with a patient
  • Understand where to get help for the complex patient
  • Discuss a suggested plan for  ‘competency achievement'

Objectives

The session offers the opportunity for all healthcare practitioners to gain knowledge, confidence and skills in compression therapies for venous/mixed leg ulcers, leg oedema and prevention of ulceration by using effective, consensual and therapeutic approaches.  It will provide an overview of conditions that would benefit from compression, and the choices, implications and planning for the appropriate management.

Recommended article/documents to read pre-session:

A modified pdf of the presentation and resources/links will be available on the Wessex LMCs Website after the event.

Please Note: The session will not deem the learner 'competent'.  The ‘journey to competency’ will be explored using national capability framework resource and subsequent eLearning modules, as will contacting the Tissue Viability team to access any local policies, documents and tools to support their learning that may be available.  Please see this short video 'A guide to becoming competent'.
