IntroductionÂ
This is an introductory session for all healthcare practitioners and is delivered face to face (full day).Â
The study session begins with identifying the stages of wound healing. How to accurately identify and describe the different tissue types and their implication on wound healing. The session will explore wound bed preparation including care of the peri-wound and surrounding skin.
Key barriers and their implications towards wound healing, and how they may affect dressing/treatment selection will be discussed and explored (there will be limited discussion around dressings - please sign up for the ‘Dressing Selection’ session for in depth dressing discussion). There will also be a short section on the basic management of leg ulceration including aetiology and immediate and necessary care. Throughout the session there will be patient scenarios focussing on various aspects of wound care, where delegates will be asked to review and participate in discussions.
The session will reach its conclusion with discussions around next steps, including care planning, continuity of care, and when to refer on.

This session aims to discuss and explore the following:Â
- The Stages and Process of Wound Healing
- Assessing and describing the wound including tissue types and wound descriptors
- Wound bed preparation including assessing, cleansing, debriding and biofilm management
- Care of peri-wound and surrounding skin including use of emollients
- Barriers to healing- (patient and wound). e.g. co-morbidities, patient factors, wound infection
- Basic aetiology of leg ulcers and immediate and necessary care
- Care planning and the importance of continuity of care
- Learning Resources
- When and to who to refer on to
- Next steps
ObjectivesÂ
This session will give the attendee the theory, knowledge, practical ideas, and key elements of wound assessment and why wounds may not heal as expected.Â
Please Note: The session will not deem the learner 'competent'.  The ‘journey to competency’ will be explored using national capability framework resource and subsequent eLearning modules, as will contacting the local Tissue Viability team to access any local policies, documents and tools to support their learning that may be available.  Please see this short video 'A guide to becoming competent'.

Event Speakers & Trainers

Matthew currently practices as an Advanced Tissue Viability Nurse Specialist working within a Hampshire NHS Trust.
He spent most of his career working in a community nursing setting, building a passion for wound care. In 2017 he became the first ‘Enhanced Wound Care Nurse’ in his trust, where, using enhanced knowledge and skills provided by the Tissue Viability specialist team, Matthew was able to evidence both better patient outcomes as well as a reduction in the number of wound care patient visits. Being successful in the role has led to the role out of ‘Enhanced Wound Care Nurses’ across the trust.
Matthew has taken the opportunity to become a community team lead on a secondment to hone his leadership and management skills, but was always keen to return to his passion and sought out a position in the local Tissue Viability Specialist Team as Advanced Tissue Viability Specialist Nurse. Matthew is an independent nurse prescriber.
Within his current role Matthew provides support, guidance and training to Primary Care across multiple practices in Hampshire. He regularly provides wound care training for community practitioners, community hospital practitioners, mental health practitioners, primary care practitioners, and nursing home nurses.
