Introduction
This 2.5-day course is a fantastic opportunity for any Health Care Assistant (HCA), GPA or Care Co-ordinator new to the role and recently moved into General Practice.
Interactive classroom days will incorporate core skills learning and provide a competency framework for each taught component, increasing both knowledge and skills for clinical practice. Using a blend of resources to include quizzes, case studies and group discussion, the teaching will be interactive and informative.
Everyone in attendance will receive their own personal development portfolio and induction framework that they can use as a working document to store their evidence of learning. This will become invaluable as their growing skill set showcases their contribution to General Practice and evidences practice.
Prior to this course each delegate will receive an electronic copy of 'The Health Care Assistant Preceptorship Framework' document as a working tool to enable some in-house development and prepare them for the course. Please ensure you download and bring this document with you to the course.
Further to the two core classroom days, there will a ‘zoom’ half-day follow-up session to review and consolidate the learning. You will also need to attend this half-day session to be eligible to receive your certificate.
Content
Topics included in the two-day course will be:
• The variable roles of the HCA/Clinical Governance
• Chaperoning patients
• Clinical Observations – NEWS
• Blood pressure recording and monitoring
• Removal of stitches and staples
• Recording an ECG
• Diabetes – an overview

Julia qualified as a Registered General Nurse in 1989 (RGN (Bsc), NMP, PGCE) and has enjoyed a diverse career working in the emergency department and acute surgical wards before settling on a career in primary care. Since 1994 Julia has worked in General Practice, building her portfolio of skills to include practice nursing and management of long-term conditions. As her career developed, she later extended her role to become a nurse practitioner and independent prescriber, working in both leadership and acute care. Her work in a large inner-city practice in Portsmouth continued until spring of 2023 whereby Julia took the decision to retire from clinical practice and focus on her educational role exclusively.
Julia remains passionate about nurse training and education, enjoying both the challenges and rewards that this brings. Her vision is to make education and learning fun, interactive, easy to understand and practical with realistic expectations for Primary Care.

Having qualified in 1988 Julia has experience in many fields of nursing and teaching. As Modern Matron for Primary Care and General Practice for Solent Healthcare Julia championed quality and governance for General Practice. This led onto a role with Portsmouth PCT, then CCG and finally ICB as the executive nurse for primary care, a role she resigned in 2023.
Having made the decision to leave her strategic role Julia now focuses on education within the company J2S that she started with her colleague over a decade ago. Julia’s speciality in teaching is General practice skills-based learning that is evidence based to ensure that health professionals can apply their knowledge by providing a high standard of safe and compassionate care.
