Introduction

This dynamic refresher session is tailored for Practice Nurses and Allied Health Professionals who wish to sharpen their assessment skills in abdominal examination.

Aims

This session aims to equip participants with the skills to take a focused and relevant gastrointestinal history, develop an understanding of the key components of the abdominal examination, and learn how to distinguish normal from abnormal findings. It will also focus on recognising red flag signs and symptoms that may indicate serious gastrointestinal conditions requiring further investigation or referral.

Objectives

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Take a focused and clinically relevant gastrointestinal history.
  • Perform a structured abdominal examination, including inspection, auscultation, percussion, and palpation.
  • Identify and interpret key clinical signs associated with common abdominal conditions such as hernias, abdominal aortic aneurysm, and signs of chronic liver disease.
  • Recognise red flag symptoms and signs that may indicate serious gastrointestinal pathology.
  • Assess specific abdominal organs including the spleen and kidneys, and detect signs of peritoneal irritation.
  • Apply clinical knowledge in a realistic setting through a virtual reality patient scenario, supporting decision-making and diagnostic reasoning in practice.

Content

  • Overview of History Taking
A focused review of how to obtain a targeted and relevant gastrointestinal history, with emphasis on symptom analysis and clinical relevance.

  • Anatomical Landmarks of the Abdomen
A refresher on key abdominal landmarks to guide accurate assessment and examination.

  • Clinical Examination
Step-by-step guidance on performing a thorough abdominal exam, including inspection, auscultation, percussion, and palpation.

  • Case Studies
Interactive case-based discussions to apply knowledge to real-world scenarios and support clinical decision-making.

  • Take-Home Messages
Practical insights and key points to reinforce learning and support safe, effective practice in clinical settings.

Places are limited to ensure an optimal, focused learning experience for attendees.
